Working as a Team
Our goals are set around different areas of the game, and we need to work on design, artwork, coding and programming, marketing, sounds, narrative, etc. We break this down by what we want to accomplish on different dates. For us, this meant the end of the semester and testing weeks. We split up our time based on our previous experience making the game. Last semester, we went into making this without knowledge or knowing each other. But after having gone through that, we now understand how long it takes each of us to do things and our strengths and weaknesses. This familiarity helps with setting our goals.
We set our goals in different categories to keep track of them. Due to the size of the project, this allows us to see the big picture and separate daunting tasks into smaller ones. Our largest category is called Sprint Stories. They contain overarching goals for our project. For example, the design lead wanted fun and thematically appropriate puzzles, and the writing lead wanted a solid story and lore foundation for the game. We also have Sprints, tasks assigned to multiple weeks of work. We break these down even further into separate tasks and then assign them to our team members. It’s a little complicated, but we can navigate such a large project by breaking down the tasks this far.
This task separation and allocation is done through Trello. However, we also use Discord to communicate how we work on them and have team meetings. Our Discord server is set up with a category for each department, so it is easy to keep track of links, resources and comments for each section of our project.
We also run weekly meetings simultaneously to catch up and see how things are going. Our meetings are done with a day between classes, so we have time to catch up on work if needed before the following tasks are assigned. This helps keep our work consistent as we are constantly in touch with each other and also prepared for our next class.
We keep communicating and respecting one another.
