Concepting the Environment

A dream is beautiful, even when it’s collapsing…

(Concept art – The Cove)

Visual element plays an important part in a game for story telling and making a first impression of a game. In Everdream, the visual aspect of the environment in each region is carefully designed to suit the story of the area. In considering its location, space, the mood and its role in the story.

(Concept art – The Cove)

We start with making mood boards for each separate environment, focusing on the overall feeling of the color and environment features that can be found in the area. For example, to make a forest vibe for the environment, there are more plant-based structures like moss, weeds, and tree branches etc. With the location, depending on if it is outside or inside, in the sky, near the water, in a cave, we decide how the lighting should look and how open the space should be. The feeling it triggers, is it serene and quiet, is it dangerous etc.

(Concept art – Treetop)

Our main character is a small little bunny, so we want the environment to look enormous against the size of the bunny.

(Concept art – Treetop)

Then we create concept arts for different regions in the area based on their mood boards, unifying them with the key concept of “dream and nightmares”. Piece by piece, the dream world is then established and showchased in the game.
