Meet the world and characters of The EverDream

Meet the world and characters of EverDream

The Everdream follows the tale of a young mage exploring the depths of a dream world. Here he meets many odd and unique characters, some who are sleeping and others, who's bodies no longer rest but their souls remain dreaming. Their stories are intertwined and connected, often relating back to puzzles players must complete to continue their adventure. Or at least, that's the plan! Our game is still very much in development but we thought we would start introducing our characters and the world, or dream, they reside in to you now. So feel free to read ahead but know there are spoilers, and that things can and will change including major plot points, characters, and names.

Introducing Our Characters

Main Character
A small rabbit mage who is destined to explore and uncover the mysteries of magic and mages. Currently, he travels through dreamscapes.

The Elder Deer (The Church)
Who knows his real name? And despite his age he is oddly helpful at navigating the dreamscapes. He works at a Magic Academy overseeing young mages.

Leifs (The Church)
These small creatures may not say much but they are certainly helpful. From general tidying to rearranging the various spells The Elder has laying around, they may one day grow into great mages. For now though, they seem to worship The Elder. At least they keep him company.

Frogith (The Church)
From afar he seems like a normal studious mage. With his nose in a book the frog barely pays attention to you. Maybe he's studying transformation magic or perhaps he's actually reading fanfiction?

Sneaky Racoon (The Forest)
He prides himself on being better than everyone else in the forest. Once a powerful mage, now magicless, he utilises other means to replace his status. Part of which requires flaunting his superiority over others, usually tricking them for his own amusement.

A Very Gullible Bird (The Forest)
Anxiety gets to the best of us, especially when it comes down to our survival. While this bird may be a creature of minimal words he's only looking out for the survival of the forest and himself.

Elderly Polar Bear (The Forest)
Why is he here? Yes, there's no snow. Yes, its no where near winter. Yes, there's ice in his backpack. Nothing will stop this old bear from travelling the lands and collecting the world's unique spells.

World Building

When concepting our world we first had a small pitch from Xin. The original pitch surrounded a dream murder mystery with a time mechanic. As a team we brainstormed various themes and locations that would interest us. Pretty quickly creating a magical fantasy theme was decided. Mostly because we're all fantasy nerds. Even early on, working with concepts we are interested and passionate about was always important. People tend to do their best work when they're interested in what they're making. And, if we would want to play what we're making then surely someone else would want to.

We then began creating characters for our plot and answering questions about the original pitch. Who would be murdered? And why? Those were our big ones. As well as why would a murder take place in a medieval world? And how could we incorporating dreaming into this? We basically brain stormed and asked each other these questions to come up with the most obscure answers we could then draw from and merge together. With a basic premise, we then created characters to enact those scenes. We needed a hero, a large enemy, and characters for our player to investigate.

Currently we are still working on this as our game is very early on. Lots of our lore we integrate into patterns, UI, the environment and the characters themselves. Compared to where we started our concept is so much more fleshed out! We have three settings, a decent plot and characters, and a narrative that makes sense! It's a big deal for us.
